We support black women seeking community in Amsterdam. By creating nurturing
safe spaces where our members can be themselves fully, we aim to have a
transformative influence on the city we call home.
Amsterdam Black Women Collective is an organization that primarily supports black
women seeking community in Amsterdam. By creating nurturing safe spaces where
our members can be themselves fully, we aim to have a transformative influence on
the city we call home.
This is especially important because although Amsterdam has more than 180
nationalities, it can be very alienating for black persons who struggle to find others in
majority white spaces throughout the city.
This collective thus serves a political purpose of creating space within the city for
those who are left on the margins. We seek to do this through the organization of
a number of activities each month that meet the social and emotional needs of our
members, and by extension the black community in Amsterdam.
Since our beginning in March 2015, we have put on more than 60 events that include
monthly brunches, reading groups, discussions, supporting black events in the city,
other social events and involvement in protests through the Intersectional Bloc.
We are also organizing the 2nd Annual Black Feminism, Womanism and the Politics
of Women of Colour in Europe on October 7, 2017.
