The Soweto Uprising hall is our main space, which can host up to 50 people. It comes with a refreshment counter, video projector, sound system, piano, access to the garden (until 10 PM) and includes the semi-professional Abya Yala kitchen.
The Soweto Uprising was a turning point in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. On the morning of 16 June 1976, thousands of students protested in the streets of Soweto township. The apartheid regime reacted with violence, killing and injuring hundreds of people.
While the uprising began in Soweto, the revolt soon spread across the country, bringing global attention to the brutalities of apartheid and accelerating the movement towards freedom and equality in South Africa.
The NieuwLand is the first project of cooperative and independent housing association Soweto, which has its roots in the squatting movement of the Transvaal neighborhood in Amsterdam.
The Soweto hall is wheelchair accessible but our toilets are not!! The nearest public spaces with wheelchair accessible toilets are Tropenmuseum (open Tuesday-Saturday 10-17H) and hotel The Manor (open 24/7).
